X-men: Apocalypse Review

The 4th Superhero film of the year!

X-men: Apocalypse stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Munn, Nicholas Noult, Rose Byrne, Evan Peters, Ben Hardy, Alexandra Shipp and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Since the beginning of time, the first ever mutant has been growing in power and planning to take over the world. He is woken, thousands of years later, and finds that mutants are not ruling the world as he expected. He recruits 4 followers to help him take over the world, the only people standing in their way is Professor X and his team of young mutants but are they ready to become X-men?

After Deadpool, Batman v Superman and Captain America Civil War, we have had the most superhero movies in a year at this point and with this 4th movie, I was not too excited going in. The trailer felt quite generic and didn’t have the stand out moments that were in the Captain America trailers. However, after Days of Future Past, we should have expected another epic film in the X-men franchise.

I will start with the character who the film is named after, Apocalypse. When we got a first glimpse at the character, people were unsure and said it looked silly and I agreed with them, but getting to see the character in action I thought he looked good and he was a good villain. His motivation to take over the world was a bit unclear but I did feel that he was a threat to the X-men and that their were stakes in the film that someone could die. I am a big fan of Oscar Isaac and I think he is one of the best actors around at the moment. I would have liked to see more Apocalypse so we could understand his motivation. The 4 horseman were very disappointing. Magneto was great but the other 3 did not do anything for the rest of the film and it just felt like Apocalypse used the first 3 mutants he came across. Angel, Storm and Psylocke were wasted and not given enough to do.

Getting to see younger versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Nightcrawler was exciting and they delivered. I felt Sophie Turner made a good Jean Grey apart from her accent was a bit odd to me as I am a big fan of Game of Thrones. Tye Sheridan as Cyclops was a stand out for me. I felt that the character of Scott Summers was perfect and he ends up with the best suit at the end!

The old cast were good as ever. Michael Fassbender continues to really impress and has a particularly emotional scene with Magneto’s family. James McAvoy was good as Professor X, despite looking slightly odd bald, but I am sure it is something we will get to used to. Jennifer Lawrence was one of my problems with the film, I felt that was not given the best lines to say and she felt like she was playing a version of Mystique, that was not proud to be a mutant even though she constantly says, “Mutant and proud”.

Quicksilver steals the film once again. As soon as the music came on and it started to go in slow motion, I got excited and looked forward to seeing how they would top the scene that everyone was talking about in Days of Future Past. The scene does not disappoint but it does leave you wondering about how Quicksilver is not able to do everything because he can run so insanely fast.

Overall, I rate X-men: Apocalypse 7/10! Certainly enjoyable, a lot of set up for the next film, wasted some characters and needed a little bit more action for me.
