Doctor Strange Review (No Spoilers)

Expand your mind!

Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong and Mads Mikkelsen.

After arrogant and talented Neurosurgeon, Stephen Strange is involved in a car crash, he looks to find a way to fix his hands so he can back to his job. He makes his way across the world where he meets the Ancient One, who teaches Doctor Strange about other dimensions and magic. However, the Ancient One is opposed by someone who seeks to bring the dark dimension into this world. Can Strange stop Kaecilius before it is too late?

The best thing about this film is the incredible visual effects throughout the entire film. The magic effect looks really cool and the look as cities are being changed and going through dimensions looked amazing and should be up their fighting for best visual effects at the Oscars.

The cast was a particular standout point for me about this film. Cumberbatch was on top form and delivers a good performance. His american accent worked and didn’t take me out of the film at all. I was also really impressed  by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Wong as Mordo and Wong. Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One was a controversial choice at the time as she is not male or Asian. I get what they were going for and she did well in the role but I still did not see her as The Ancient One I know. Unfortunately, we get another villain who was not memorable in a Marvel movie. However, I liked the set up for future movie villains that we will get in the sequels.

Where this film suffered was the story for me. At times, I felt they got the pacing wrong. When Strange was training, you do not get a sense of how long he is actually training there as The Ancient One implies that he will be training for years, but it passes over about 30 minute period. I was also expecting more about the multiverse but I was happy with the tease we got, and look forward to seeing more next time out.

Overall, I rate Doctor Strange 7/10! In a year that has been full of disappointing films, this one lives up to the hype and is another solid film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
