Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Review (No Spoilers)

A rebellion  built on hope!

Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Wen Jiang, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Riz Ahmed and Mads Mikkelsen.

Jyn Erso, is brought in to help the Rebels try to locate her father so the Rebels can steal the plans to the Death Star. Along with Captain Andor and K-2SO, Jyn must convince the Rebels there is still hope and they can get the plans before the battle station is complete.

First thing that you need to know, is that if you are a Star Wars fan you will find that this film has the best ending to any film ever. I won’t spoil what happens but it is amazing, my jaw was on the floor and it was my highlight of the film.

As for the rest of the film, it is thoroughly enjoyable. First of all no opening crawl, no traditional theme, the title card doesn’t come in straight away, all things that felt odd when watching but you soon get over it. Most of the first act is spend hoping around planets as you get to know the team of Rebels who will be undergoing this mission, this was slightly annoying, and slows down the start of the film, but then once the team is together the plot really kicks in. The second act was strong but slows down the story, and the third act is amazing, tying in to A New Hope perfectly.

The performances by everyone were amazing. Seeing Felicity Jones as badass lead was weird but perfect and good to see. After Rey leading The Force Awakens, it looks like Star Wars is moving towards badass women across the galaxy. I really liked Diego Luna and Donnie Yen. K-2SO will be a big stand out for a lot but my favourite characters were Cassian Andor and Chirrut Imwe. Chirrut had more surprising laughs and Cassian has the most character development and his passion for the rebellion, being willing to do anything for what he believes in. I was not too sure about Riz Ahmed in the start but he got better as the film went on. I also was a bit unsure with Forest Whitaker  as Saw Gerrera, I felt he over acted at points but he also did not have the best lines to work with, but I did like the slightly psycho edge that he had.

As always with the big films the visuals were stunning. There were several points during the film that I need as a poster or will be the wallpaper on my laptop. The other main point about the visuals is the incredible steps in CGI that had been taken for this film. In particular, there are two characters that I won’t spoilt but are very impressive.

Overall, I rate Rogue One 9/10! The ending of the film is the best thing I have ever seen and could watch over and over again. One that will go down in film history!
