Split Review

Kevin has 23 distinct personalities. The 24th is about to be unleashed.

Split stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula and Haley Lu Richardson.

Three girls are kidnapped by a man. When they awake, they find they are locked in a room and that their kidnapper has multiple personalities. While Kevin is having a mental breakdown, some of the personalities will help the girls but some of the personalities need the girls for the beast.

The best thing about this movie is the excellent performance by James McAvoy. I am a big fan of McAvoy and I think he is a highly under rated actor, who always gives his best in any role. He does not fail to deliver. Playing a character who has so many different personalities could not have been easy but a fun challenge for the actor. The different personalities are clearly defined and it is incredible how the smallest thing done by the character lets you know which personality is “in the light”. The other performances were okay, a couple of the girls performances were basic but they did what they had to do.

I was expecting it to feel more scary, than it was. Because of the different personalities, some of them felt scary and threatening, but others didn’t which took away some of the scariness out of the film.

Because Split was directed by M. Night Shyamalan, you are waiting for the twist, wondering what it is going to be the whole way through the film. I think that was the problem for me. I spent a lot of time wondering what the twist would be, and created in my head scenarios I think would have been more shocking than the twist we got.

Overall, I rate Split 6/10! Do not fear though as I went with a group of people, who all really enjoyed it. I appreciate what the film did and it is good, but I just did not enjoy it as much as I wanted.

What did you think of Split?

Did you predict the twist?
