Passengers Review

There is a reason they woke up.

Passengers stars Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Sheen and Lawrence Fishburne.

The spaceship Avalon is on a 120 year trip from Earth to a new planet, Homestead 2. With over 5000 people on board, asleep, they are awaiting their new home. After a malfunction, Jim Preston, is woken up thinking he is near arrival, when he is actually 90 years away from his new home.

I saw a lot of bad reviews for this film going in so didn’t go in with high expectations. Positives first. I think it is a great, original concept and it is always refreshing to see an original films in this time of reboots and sequels. The CGI effects were fantastic, I really liked the look of the futuristic tech in the film and the ship looked great. In particular, I thought the robot part of Michael Sheen’s character looked very impressive and I really enjoyed Michael Sheen’s character of the android bar tender, who lightens the film and the characters who are in a situation which they can’t get out of.

I don’t want to say this next part is negative, but it isn’t positive. For me, where this movie falls short of being really good, is the script. I felt, at times, that particular lines were not delivered well or were just poor lines. There is one character in the film, that didn’t need to be in the film, and only purpose was to speed along the climax of the film. I get why this character was brought in, but I think there could have been better ways for the characters to get to that point. I, also, believe that Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence were not the right people for the roles in the film. I found that, especially towards the end of the film, that Jennifer Lawrence’s performance slipped and could have been better, as we have seen, she is a talented actress and I am sure she will have better performances ahead of her. I am a big fan of Chris Pratt, however I just felt that he was wrong for the role, and I would have seen some lesser known actors get a chance, but I understand why these two lead actors were chosen. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are two of the biggest stars around and we know they can do better than they delivered in films.

Overall, I rate Passengers 7/10! You can definitely have a good time with the film, but the concept deserves more than we got and it could have been great.
