Hacksaw Ridge Review

One of the greatest war heroes in American history never fired a bullet!

Hacksaw Ridge stars Andrew Garfield, Hugo Weaving, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington and Teresa Palmer.

Desmond Doss enlists into the army during World War Two, but because of his religion,(and previously wanting to be a doctor), he enlists as a medic. But when he is training, he is ordered to take part in rifle training, but refuses as he believes it is wrong to kill and doesn’t even want to pick up the rifle. This causes conflicts amongst his regimen, who try to kick him out. But when they are called to war and fight in Japan. They must put their faith in the medic, that he can save as many people as possible.

I have been really looking forward to seeing this film, because of the hype it has received from the Oscar buzz about the film and praising Andrew Garfield’s performance. It did not disappoint. Andrew Garfield’s performance of the inspiring hero, Desmond Doss, is extremely good and I would not be surprised if he wins Best Actor at the Oscars. His accent was very impressive and came across as completely natural. The emotional part of the performance was very impressive as well and you instantly feel for Desmond and follow him through the film. I also thought that the performances by Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington were a lot better than I expected. Vaughn particularly impressed, managing to get a strong and believable performances, as well getting his comedic side in the role as well, providing the main laughs that are in the film.

Being a Mel Gibson directed film, I should not have been as surprised by the level of strong violence depicted during the war scenes. This was so effective and really makes you feel like you are part of the action. The first big fight scene you get was particularly impressive, hard to watch because of the violence but you can’t take your eyes off it because it is so good and realistic.

Overall, I rate Hacksaw Ridge 10/10! I would happily say it is my second favourite film, that I have seen recently, just behind La La Land.

What did you think of Hacksaw Ridge?

Do you think Andrew Garfield should win best actor at the Oscars?
