The LEGO Batman Movie Review

Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman!

The LEGO Batman Movie stars Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes, Zach Galifianakis and Jenny Slate.

When the new commissioner of Gotham City decides she wants to work with Batman to bring down criminals it makes Batman feel like his life would be incomplete without taking down villains. He must stop The Joker taking over Gotham City, with new villains for Batman to face, as well as confronting his biggest fear.

The Lego movie was a big surprise hit of 2014, with the biggest standout character being everyone’s favourite superhero, Batman, so with Warner Bros having the rights to make a Batman movie it made sense for them to a solo Lego Batman movie. What we get is one of the best Batman movies we have seen.

Positives. The cast is a big standout, Will Arnett returns as Batman and does a great job owning the character, really making the Lego version of the character his own. His comedic timing is great and with the voice it creates a lot of laughs. Zach Galifianakis was the biggest surprise for me. When he was cast as The Joker I wasn’t sure how he would do in the role, I couldn’t imagine him doing the right voice for the character, but he made the role his own and it felt a lot like Mark Hamill’s Joker from the animated series. Another big positive were all the little Batman easter eggs hidden throughout the film. There were some that were very in your face and you had to know Batman to understand but there were also a lot every where you looked and it will definitely take multiple viewings to catch them all. But the main thing they got right was Batman himself. Everyone working on the film clearly had a good understanding of the character and his history and what they can do with him in the film.

The only real negative I have, is a very small one and is just because I am such a big Batman fan. Due to the film being for children and being part of the Lego universe they changed a couple of characters and their back stories which was annoying but it is completely understandable and makes it easier for children and people who don’t know the other characters to understand.

Overall, I rate The LEGO Batman Movie 8/10! A really good time for children, parents, families, nerds and non nerds.
