Beauty and the Beast (2017) Review

Be our guest!

Beauty and the Beast stars Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Ian Mckellen, Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nathan Mack.

Live action version of the 1991 Disney classic. When Belle’s father goes missing, she goes looking for him and finds him help hostage in a castle by a Beast. She takes his place as the hostage, here the furniture try to get her to fall in love with the Beast, so they can break the curse and become human again.

Positives. My favourite thing about this version of the story was the perfect casting of Josh gad as LeFou. He looks exactly like the character from the original Disney film and he really brought quite a few laughs to the film. The story is slightly different adding a couple of scenes of back story to both the lead characters, which worked in this story and I appreciate the gamble they took changing little parts of it. I saw a lot of comments saying about the CGI used for the beast, I did not have a problem with it and thought he looked good.

Negatives. Unfortunately there are a few negatives about the film. I didn’t appreciate all the autotuned singing. Emma Watson’s singing voice felt unnatural . I get that they were trying to make her sound more like the original but that is the problem with the film in general. Because the film was so loved it was always going to be difficult to recapture the magic from the first. The songs are disappointing and feel like people trying too hard to copy the original, and better versions of the songs. The dialogue stood out and felt like a cartoon which, at times, took me out of the film when I watch real people saying the lines.

There is a good time to be had with this film, but don’t sit and think about it too much. People have to remember that this film is for children, is it perfect? No, but you can definitely enjoy parts of it and if you don’t then there will be other people who do, and a lot of little girls who really enjoyed it.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
