Power Rangers Review

It’s morphin time!

Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Becky G, Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston and Bill Hader.

Five high school misfits come across five coloured coins and a space ship, their lives are changed as they all gain superpowers. They must team up to stop the evil Rita Repulsa from unearthing a crystal that will destroy the world. They must become Power Rangers!

Positives. This movie is a lot of fun. It really manages to recapture the magic of Power Rangers without feeling like a copy, it takes away the campy-ness of the original and brings it into the 21st century. The first act is a big strength of the film, setting up 5 good characters and head a strong steady pace to keep you interested. RJ Cyler is the standout amongst the cast, his character is the most interesting and gets most of the jokes, which the majority land really well. The CGI was also another strong point in the film, the suits look really good and have been CGI enhanced and the fight at the end, which is mostly CGI, looks brilliant.

Negatives. The final act of the film is where the film suffered me, the final fight isn’t as long as I would like and the action was slightly disappointing. The other big problem with the film is the villain, who suffers from the same problem as most Marvel villains in that she is slightly forgettable and lacks any real motive.

A really good time to be had, there are some plot holes and coincidences but the film overall is a lot of fun. Definitely recommended.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
