Baywatch Review

Beaches ain’t ready!

Baywatch stars Dwayne Johnson, Zack Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera and Jon Bass.

When Baywatch lifeguards are sent a new recruit, Matt Brody, a former Olympic swimmer, a long with the other new recruits and the current Baywatch team, they uncover a drug business going down on their beach. They come together to stop the drug from spreading and a business from taking over the whole beach.

This film had a lot of negative reviews coming from critics, which really brought me down on a film I was certainly excited for, so I ended up going into the review with low expectations. Fortunately, this movie is better than the reviews I have seen. A lot of the complaints were about the humour, and this film is definitely funny. Not funny all the time as a lot of jokes definitely didn’t work but, there are numerous jokes that do land. This film depends on your sense of humour, as to whether you will enjoy the film or not.

A big reason why I enjoyed the film was because I felt like it didn’t take itself too seriously, in a 21 Jump Street kind of way. As someone who has not watched the original TV show, and limited knowledge of the show comes from Friends, it felt like it was poking fun of itself and at the original show at the same time.

The performances are okay. The Rock was standard Rock that we have come to see in just about every film he does but it is enjoyable, but not his best role. Zack Efron plays the same type of character that we have got used to seeing him in other films such as Bad Neighbours. I would really like to see him take on a different role and be given a chance in a big franchise like Star Wars or Marvel or DC, where he doesn’t play the same type of role that we have seen from him a few times now. The rest of the cast takes a back seat but they all have good chemistry together and feel like a team, despite the women mostly being there to motivate the male characters and for them, and the audience, to stare at, but don’t worry if you are a woman, Zack Efron has his top off a lot.

Could have been funnier, but I would still like a sequel to see what is next for the team.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
