Despicable Me 3 Review

Oh brother.

Despicable Me 3 stars Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Trey Parker, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Grier and Nev Scharrel.

After Gru and Lucy are fired from the Anti Villain League, they are contacted by Gru’s long-lost twin, Dru. Dru wants Gru to go back to his life of villainy, so they decide to team up to steal the world’s biggest diamond from villain, Balthazar Bratt, a child TV star from the 80’s.

Positives. A big plus for me was the fact that they didn’t over use the minions. The minions are obviously a big draw for children, but proved they can’t lead a film by themselves after their solo film last year. In this film, they are given their own story but it isn’t the main focus. They are in the film enough for children to enjoy but not too much that they become annoying. I, really like the villain in this film too. Balthazar Bratt is an interesting villain, who’s motivation is clear and he is funny. Obviously, his use of 80’s music is similar to the trend going on at the moment started by Guardians of the Galaxy, and it could have not worked and felt too much like a rip off of other films.

Negatives. The secondary story about Lucy trying to become a mum for the 3 girls, didn’t work for me. It felt like they just needed something for Lucy and the girls to do while Gru was off with his brother. The story makes sense but doesn’t have enough time to work as well as it should and when Margo has a problem it is dealt with quickly, where as I wish it had come back into play later in the film.

An enjoyable film that proves that only a side of Minions is the perfect amount and that Gru is the strongest part of this franchise.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
