Spider-Man: Homecoming Review (No Spoilers)

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Jacob Batalon, Robert Downey Jr, Jon Favreau, Laura Harrier, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei and Tony Revolori.

After Peter Parker returns to New York after the events of Captain America: Civil War, he is desperate to prove himself as a hero worthy of becoming an Avenger. He tries to balance being a teenager in school and being a hero, but it proves more difficult than he thought. But when a new threat arises, Spider-man is out to prove that he can stop him by himself.

Positives. This, being the sixth solo Spider-man film we have had on the big screen, this is the first one that manages to nail the perfect tone for Spider-man, that is shown in the comic books. This is done by finally managing to get both Peter Parker and Spider-man perfectly right, it manages to balance how he would actually be feeling after the events in Captain America Civil War and his teenage life, trying to keep his big secret and live a normal life really well. This film also manages to feel the most like an actual comic book, which I really appreciated. Tom Holland is owed a lot of credit for his role and is my favourite Peter Parker we have seen so far (Sorry Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire). Marvel Villains are not known for being memorable, but Michael Keaton does a fantastic job of playing The Vulture (yet another bird person) this being one of the strongest and most terrifying villains we have seen in the MCU. I really appreciate the horror side that was brought to the character with several moments where he posed a great threat. A lot of people were worried about this turning into an Iron Man film, but it isn’t, he is used but the perfect amount. Tony Stark’s presence in the film is definitely felt as his name is thrown around a lot, but RDJ is sparsely used and Jon Favreau is seen more often that anticipated. I also have to say that this is my favourite Spider-man costume we have seen by a long way, it looks even better than it did in Civil War.

Negatives. There isn’t anything too much majorly wrong with this film but there are a few things that I would have liked to change. I would have liked to see more of Zendaya’s character, she has several good jokes but nothing much more than we have seen in the trailers, so I would have liked to have seen her have a bigger role because when she is on-screen she is great. I also would have liked to have seen more of Peter in school and interaction with the school characters, a lot of the movie is about Spider-man wanting to prove himself, which is understandable, so we just miss out on him interacting with Zendaya’s character, Flash Thompson and the rest of school.

A really enjoyable film with a couple of interesting post credit scenes that you must stay for!

Rating: 4 out of 5.
