Vince Vaughn portrays Bradley Thomas, a drug runner who gets put in prison after being caught, however his employer is not happy. His employer kidnaps his pregnant wife and threatens them unless Bradley takes down an inmate in Cell Block 99.
Vince Vaughn is known for playing comedic roles in films such as The Internship and Wedding Crashers, recently he has changed to more dramatic roles with True Detective, Hacksaw Ridge and now leading this brutal action, thriller. He gives his best ever performance in this role. I have always seen Vaughn as a comedy guy and never seen him as a threat but he plays the scarily, brutal Bradley Thomas and holds his own in these brutal fights. You really care about the character, who is not necessarily a good person but has a good morals and you want him to win as the treat against his pregnant wife is so disturbing that he has to complete his mission.
I do have to warn you that this film is extremely violent, I was not expecting it to be anywhere near as violent as it is. I was expecting something along the lines of the hallway scenes in Daredevil, but from the first fight scene in the prison you think that is as bad as it can get, but it gets worse and more and more violent. There are a couple of moments that I don’t think I will ever forget, because I didn’t think I would ever see them.
I also wanna give credit to the cinematography of the film and the use of colour. When I watched the trailer I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the colour used because it has the dark, dirty colour that is often used in street crime/drug related films that I don’t always like but the use of colour particularly when you get to the prison. The whole look of the prisons are great.
Overall, Brawl in Cell Block 99 is a really good, dark, intense thriller. I hope Vince Vaughn gets some recognition that he deserves for his role but I’m not sure if the film is the type that awards tend to go for. I also hope people support this film because it is very good.
